Crinone 8% FAQs

Can Crinone 8% be used at the same time as other vaginal therapies?

Crinone 8% should not be applied at the same time as other local vaginal treatments. If other local intravaginal therapy is to be used, it should be administered at least 6 hours before or after Crinone 8% administration. Consult your doctor for more information about the specific drugs that have been prescribed for you.

Does Crinone 8% or the applicator cause vaginal irritation?

Crinone 8% does not contain perfumes or dyes. During studies of Crinone 8%, vaginal irritation was reported at an incidence of less than 5%. In addition, the Crinone 8% applicator has been specially developed for vaginal use, with a smooth, rounded tip designed so that there are no edges that could damage delicate tissue.

Will intercourse interfere with Crinone 8%?

No. Regular sexual activity has not been found to lessen the effectiveness of Crinone 8%.

What if the Crinone 8% applicator is not positioned correctly or inserted far enough?

Under normal circumstances, it is not difficult to position the applicator correctly. Even if the applicator is not inserted all the way to the cervix, gently squeezing the bulb will direct the gel towards the cervix. In addition, normal movement between the vaginal walls will spread the gel.

Some gel remains in the applicator following administration. Is this OK?

Yes. The applicator is designed to deliver the correct amount of gel with a gentle squeeze. A small amount of gel will be left in the applicator after administration. This is normal; the proper dose will have been delivered.

Do patients have to remain lying down after administration?

No. Crinone 8% adheres to the vaginal lining upon administration, enabling patients to stand and go about their normal routine immediately after application.

Will I experience any discharge?

Typically the gel stays attached to the vaginal walls as the medicine absorbs. Do not be concerned if small, white globules appear as a discharge after several days of usage. It is common, and not harmful, to have some gel residue buildup. Gel accumulation may be less likely to occur if the gel is applied in the morning because activities like walking may help spread the gel on the vaginal walls. If gel accumulation becomes bothersome, talk to your doctor.

Who should NOT use Crinone 8%?

Crinone 8% should not be used by women who have:

  • Allergies to progesterone, progesterone-like drugs, or any of the inactive ingredients in the gel
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • Liver dysfunction or disease
  • Known or suspected cancer of the breast or genital organs
  • Had a missed abortion (ie, a miscarriage in which the gestational tissue remains in the uterus)
  • A history of or active thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders

Does Crinone 8% require special storage or handling care?

Crinone 8% should be stored between 59° and 86°F (15° and 30°C). Do not expose Crinone 8% to extreme cold or heat. Crinone 8% does not require refrigeration or other special care. The individually wrapped applicators may be easily carried in a handbag for use when women are away from home.
